This Activity addresses the topic and issue of initiating and supporting applied work on CBNRM.

This Activity follow from the earlier emphasis on Networking, and indirectly from the emphases on Communication, Knowledge Management, and Capacity building.

Projects financed by EEA and Norway Grants (2008-2016)

CBNRM Networking has been involved as a Norwegian partner in a number of projects funded by this grant scheme, addressing a broad set of concerns, while centering around social development. The projects were located in Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania, and Slovenia. The Norwegian consulting firm Supras Ltd. was involved in a couple of the projects. "PDS" is abbreviation of "Project Data Sheet" and is followed by a project number.

  1. Support for Local Level Planning  (PDS 043)

    Period: September 2008 - May 2010
    About: Coming out of the previous political-economical communist regime, stakeholders in transition countries largely lack the ability to network and associate. This project accordingly addressed capacity building and networking of stakeholders in civil society and the public sector. It aimed to make possible and encourage participation of civil society in a democratic decision-making process, and cooperation between local civil society initiatives and appropriate institutions in the public sector.

  2. Public Support to the Sustainable Management of Natura 2000 Sites Along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast  (PDS 044)

    Period: September 2008 - September 2010
    About: The coastal zone in Bulgaria is heavily built up, with international mass tourism representing a large and increasing threat to sustainable management. Nobody seems to be in control or take responsibility. In this situation, this projects aimed to raise awareness among coastal citizens for the fact that people, in civil society and public sector, have to collaborate to achieve changes. Towards this, the project argued for increased involvement of stakeholders in the public sector in coastal management, and increased communication and contact between stakeholders in public sector and civil society.

  3. Ecotourism in Tara Dornelor, an Instrument for Sustainable Development  (PDS 045).

    Contract Value (approx): 350,000 EUR
    Period: July 2008 - April 2011
    About: An integrated approach to utilizing ecotourism and production of renewable energy to advance biodiversity protection and sustainable development. More specifically, the focus was on supporting local commune administrations and the private sector in building a network in support of ecotourism. In addition to the direct goals of training and capacity building in connection with building ecotourism capacity in the region, there was a secondary focus on conflict prevention and democracy building. The assignment centered on social analysis and capacity building.

  4. Promoting Democratic Values with the TV Program "Small Stories From the Roma World"  (PDS 053)

    Contract Value (approx): 130,000 EUR
    Period: November 2014 - February 2016
    About: The project produced 20 short films, each around 10 minutes long, which presents aspects of Roma life and culture, as viewed from within the culture. The director is herself a Roma. The film will be shown on national TV, as well as internationally. They aim to contribute to creating a better understanding between Roma and the majority culture. Experiences in Bulgaria and Norway with teaching about cultural understanding will be shared.

  5. Improvement of Penitentiary Staff's Capacity for Prevention of Discriminiation and Protection of Human Rights Through Training Based on European  (PDS 055)

    Contract Value (approx): 250,000 EUR
    Period: April 2015 - March 2017
    About: The project contributed to improving the competence of staff in selected penitentiaries, through training and transfer of Norwegian experience, and updating of programs for initial and ongoing training. The project focused specifically on Roma inmates, which constitute a majority of all inmates. As part of the project, a Bulgarian delegation traveled to Norway to meet and share experiences with colleagues.

  6. Seniors, Resources in the Community: Volunteering at Third Age  (PDS 056)

    Contract Value (approx): 200,000 EUR
    Period: 2015 - 2016
    About: Aims to promote volunteering by seniors, addressed through: a training program, placement in institutions and communities, and networking of senior volunteers.

  7. Increasing the Capacity of Lecturers at the Medical University in Plovdiv in Training Focused on Health Awareness Among Roma Citizens  (PDS 057)

    Period: April 2015 - October 2016
    About: Increase the competence of teachers in higher education on educational support and health awareness among Roma citizens.

  8. Renovation Impact on Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Habits of Residents  (PDS 058)

    Implemented by: Building and Envergy Conservation Office
    CBNRM Networking's Responsibilities: Adviser, Trainer
    Contract Value (approx): 175,000 EUR
    Period: May 2015 - September 2016
    About: A comprehensive and in-depth study of the apartment buildings sector, combining social and environmental engineering research methods. The aim is to find out how to influence people decisions regarding renovations, climate change and energy efficiency, as well as to understand which business and energy efficiency models are the most appropriate in order to reach the goals of all involved parties (residents, private enterprises, government, EU etc.).

Projects to Be Financed by EEA and Norway Grants (2019-2021)

CBNRM Networking is involved in several proposals submitted to the EEA and Norway Grants that currently are evaluated. The include the following projects:

  1. The Roma Women: Overcoming Stereotypes
    Country: Bulgaria
    CBNRM Networking's Responsibilities: Adviser, Trainer
    About: This project will focus on the following: (1) raising awareness of Roma women about the internal power they carry, (2) provoke women self- and group-activation, and (c) involve men in the process of raising the new Roma women.

  2. Way out: on Roma Women and Trafficking and Prostitution
    Country: Bulgaria
    CBNRM Networking's Responsibilities: Adviser, Trainer
    About: The objectives would be to: (1) elaborate a detailed profile of Roma women at risk of trafficking and forced prostitution, as well as possible 'way out' strategies; (2) build capacity among staff and field agents to recognise Roma women at risk of trafficking and forced prostitution; (3) equip Roma women at risk of trafficking and forced prostitution in Bulgaria with competencies to recognize and undertake 'way out' strategies; and (4) disseminate the experience of supporting Roma women at risk of trafficking and forced prostitution in Bulgaria and abroad.

  3. Establishment of a Mechanism for Activation and Informed Participation of Civil Society in Policies Conducted on Local Level

    About: involve citizen groups and civil society in the political and administrative work that takes place at the community level. This is partly to inform them, and partly that they can become involved in the work.

  4. Ethical Scools of the Future

    About: Work with schools to inform about ethics and discrimination, and how to prevent it.
